Connecting Zephyr Devices at Scale Using Open Source Solutions – Julien Vermillard, Tado

Cloud-connected low-power devices are rising fast, but how can these run safely and efficiently using standards and open-source solutions? Zephyr’s built-in CoAP and LWM2M clients can be easily coupled with open-source Eclipse Leshan, Californium, and other open-source projects to manage them at scale. After introducing the CoAP and LWM2M standards, we will compare two architectures using those technologies. One is based on cellular LPWAN solutions (LTE-M/NB-IoT), and the second is based on Matter/Thread for smart home thermostats. Even if the systems look similar (cloud-connected low-power wireless systems), the ecosystem, certification, and network topology dictated quite different solutions, but still based on Zephyr with open-source technologies.
