Optimizing the power consumption of battery powered devices is critical for many reasons. From improving user experience and environmental footprint through reduced battery swaps, to simple technical feasibility by reducing power supply footprints. While Zephyr provides most of the tools required to get boards down to the sub 10 uA idle range, it is not always obvious what needs to be done in order to get there. In this session we will step through the various strategies and concepts to achieve ultra-low power operation with Zephyr that I have obtained through working on over a dozen unique hardware designs over the last 3 years, together with non-obvious pitfalls. The case study is a Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840 based general platform, achieving 5uA idle current draw with the following features: Bluetooth, onboard flash, SD card, LoRaWAN, battery monitoring, solar charging, USB charging, GNSS modem, 3-axis accelerometer, 9-axis IMU, temperature/pressure/humidity sensing, light sensor and UART logging.
