This year, the Zephyr Project is thrilled to announce something extra special – we will have a table at FOSDEM! For years, our community members have actively participated in talks and sessions, but this marks the first time we will have a dedicated space to meet attendees, showcase Zephyr RTOS, and deepen our community engagement.

A Look Back at FOSDEM 2024:

As we prepare for the excitement of FOSDEM 2025, let’s take a moment to look back at FOSDEM 2024. The Zephyr Project had an amazing presence at the event, held on February 3 & 4 in Brussels. It was a memorable weekend for our community, filled with many talks and great opportunities to connect and engage.

The Zephyr Project featured several insightful talks by experts, showcasing the project’s versatility and impact in various domains. The first Zephyr RTOS related talk was by Daniel Baluta on the Sound Open Firmware project, highlighting its integration with Zephyr RTOS and its pivotal role in advancing audio DSP firmware development.

Vivien Barnier and Martin Jäger presented “Power to the People: Technology for Access to Energy,” focusing on how open source technology, including Zephyr RTOS, can address energy access challenges in underserved communities.

Nicole Pappler and Philipp Ahmann delivered a talk titled “How Open Source Projects Approach Functional Safety,” exploring the role of Zephyr and similar projects in ensuring safety and reliability in critical applications.

Mohammed Billoo showcased Zephyr’s compatibility with emerging technologies in his talk, “Zephyr and RISC-V: I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghosts,” which demonstrated its integration with the RISC-V architecture.

Benjamin Cabe shared his inspiring journey in “From an Artificial Nose Weekend Hack to a Future-Proof IoT Device,” where he discussed creating and maintaining a Zephyr-powered IoT device from a weekend project.

On Sunday, Nicole Pappler and Stanislav Pankevich explored the SPDX Safety Profile and its application within the Zephyr Project, emphasizing how it helps manage safety-critical projects and ensures compliance.

These talks exemplify Zephyr’s growing relevance in embedded systems, IoT, and safety-critical domains.

The Zephyr Project Hour at Building F was another big highlight, where enthusiastic attendees doubled in numbers compared to previous years, gathering to exchange ideas and deepen their understanding of the platform.

Thanks to the Linux Foundation Europe, the Zephyr Project was also part of the global projects represented at their stand during FOSDEM 2024. Community interaction was a main goal throughout the event. Zephyr maintainers were active at the Linux Foundation Europe stand, sharing knowledge, discussing the latest developments in Zephyr RTOS, and engaging with visitors.

Points to remember!

Whether you are attending as a speaker or participant, here are some tips to get the most out of FOSDEM 2025:

  • Submit your talk proposals: FOSDEM’s Call for Papers (CFP) for devrooms, main tracks, and lightning talks is closing soon (December 1, 2024)! If you have exciting projects or ideas involving Zephyr RTOS, don’t miss the chance to present them.
  • Plan your schedule: Review the agenda ahead of time to identify sessions that align with your interests.
  • Visit the Zephyr Project Table: This year, we will have a table at FOSDEM, so stop by to chat with maintainers, explore the latest developments in Zephyr RTOS, and ask any questions you have.
  • Network with the Community: From informal gatherings to organized meetups, FOSDEM offers countless opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Be sure to participate in the Zephyr Project Hour and other community activities.

See You at FOSDEM 2025!
